What is a service type?

Modified on Tue, 26 May at 2:08 PM

Service types are classifications defined by IATA (the International Air Transport Association) to describe the nature of a specific flight. They allow you to distinguish between different categories of air service — from standard scheduled passenger flights through to cargo, charter and other specialised operations.

The most common service type

For most travellers, the overwhelming majority of flights taken will fall under Service Type J — Normal Service. This applies to all standard scheduled passenger flights and is by far the most frequently encountered type in the database.

Using the Service Type filter

The Service Type filter is particularly useful when you want to focus on a specific category of operation. For example, to find cargo services operated by Lufthansa Cargo, enter LH as the operator code and select Cargo as the service type. The search will then return only cargo flights matching your criteria, filtering out all other service types.
