How are retirement dates calculated?

How is the projected retirement date determined?

The projected retirement date gives you a forward-looking view of when an aircraft is expected to leave a fleet. Depending on what information is available, this date is based either on confirmed data or an informed editorial estimate.

When confirmed data is available

  • Leased aircraft
The confirmed lease end date is used as the projected retirement date. This reflects the date on which the aircraft is contractually due to leave the operator's fleet.
  • Company-owned aircraft
Where an operator has publicly announced a phase-out date, this is used as the projected retirement date.

When no confirmed date exists

  • Editorial estimate
Where no confirmed date is available, our editorial team produces an informed estimate. This draws on a combination of financial reports, news articles, and the age of the aircraft to determine when it is most likely to leave the fleet.

Note: Estimated dates are reviewed and updated by our editorial team as new information becomes available. If you believe a projected retirement date is incorrect or have a source that suggests otherwise, you can use the envelope icon next to the aircraft record to send a message directly to the responsible fleet editor.

How should I use this field?

The projected retirement date is best used as a planning and forecasting indicator rather than a guaranteed end date. It is particularly useful for:

  • Identifying upcoming fleet renewal cycles and retirement waves across an airline's fleet.
  • Supporting sales and business development by flagging operators likely to be in the market for new aircraft or services.
  • Tracking lease expirations for lessors and asset managers monitoring their portfolio.
