What do "opb" and "operating carrier" mean in the Remarks column?

Modified on Fri, 29 May at 3:21 PM

The Remarks column on ch-aviation uses two specific terms to describe how a route is operated. Here is what each one means.

opb — operated by

The abbreviation opb stands for "operated by" and indicates that the route is not operated by the scheduled carrier itself, but by another operator — typically on a wet-lease basis. This means a different airline is providing both the aircraft and the crew to operate the service on behalf of the carrier shown.

Operating carrier

The operating carrier refers to the airline that is physically operating the aircraft on a codeshare flight. This is distinct from the marketing carriers, which are the airlines placing their own flight codes on that same service.

Finding more detail on the Route Details page

For a more complete picture, the Route Details page provides additional information beyond what is shown in the Remarks column:

  • For wet-lease arrangements, the Carrier column shows the wet-lease operator, while the "on behalf of" column identifies the carrier on whose behalf the route is being served.
  • For codeshare flights, the Codeshares section shows which marketing carriers are placing their codes on the operating carrier's services for the selected route.
